What is training at Krav Maga Hastings actually like?

You're not here to become a fighter. You're here because you want to feel less vulnerable — to know that if something happened, a grab, a shove, a threat that escalates, you wouldn't freeze.

That's exactly what Krav Maga trains. Not techniques for the gym — responses for the moment when it matters. You'll learn to read a situation before it turns, and to act decisively if it does. That shift in how you carry yourself is something you'll notice within weeks.

In brief: the system behind it is Krav Maga Global — used in over 60 countries, led internationally by Eyal Yanilov, who trained directly under Imi Lichtenfeld, the founder of Krav Maga. In Hastings and Napier, that's taught by Instructor Ben.

What training at Krav Maga Hastings gives you

Real practical skills, no experience needed. You don't need a martial arts background to start — training is built to take complete beginners to genuinely capable, step by step.

A system trained the same way in over 60 countries. Every class follows the same practical curriculum used internationally — what you learn in your first month is what students learn everywhere else this training happens.

Skills that build quickly, taught safely. Most students notice a real shift in confidence within the first few weeks. Contact and pressure build progressively, so you're never thrown into something you're not ready for.

An instructor who's done the work himself. Ben trained and was assessed to the same international standard used everywhere this system is taught — so you're learning the real thing, not a local variation.

What Krav Maga training covers

Strength and size don't matter here. You'll learn to exploit an attacker's weak points with efficient, fight-ending technique — starting with fundamentals, then building toward dynamic, reality-based drills.

Situational awareness

Reading a situation early and creating distance before it turns physical.

Strikes and defence

Efficient, fight-ending strikes and defences against common attacks.

Releases and escapes

Breaking free from grabs, chokes, and holds — regardless of size or strength.

Weapons awareness

Recognising and responding to weapon threats as part of the core curriculum.

Ground defence

Defending and getting back to your feet if a situation goes to the ground.

Pressure training

Dynamic, reality-based drills that build toward defending realistic, chaotic scenarios.

De-escalation

Verbal and positional tools to avoid a confrontation before it starts.

Protecting others

Applying the same principles when someone with you needs protecting too.

Real skills.
Real confidence.
Self defence for the real world.

You won't be the only beginner in the room.

You want to feel more capable

The most common reason people join. You'll stay because the training delivers on that — and because of the people you train alongside.

You work in a high-risk profession

Many students work in healthcare, security, and other roles where physical confrontation is a real possibility. The training's focus on de-escalation is especially relevant to your day-to-day.

You want a genuine challenge

Maybe other gyms felt too casual or too competitive. This is structured, demanding, and worth the effort.

How do I book my first class?

+
Use the booking button anywhere on this page — pop in your details, then choose Tuesday, Thursday, let us know either works, or ask Ben to call you instead. You'll get confirmation by email, or a call from Ben if that's what you choose, and he'll be expecting you.

How much does training cost?

+
Membership at KMG Hastings is $100 per month, covering both weekly sessions — Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Book your first class through the button on this page and Ben will confirm the details.

I'm in Napier — is Hastings too far to train?

+
Not at all — Giants Boxing Gym is around 20 minutes from Napier city centre, and it's the closest KMG-certified training in the Hawke's Bay region. Students regularly travel in from Napier and Havelock North.

What should I bring to my first class?

+
Comfortable, flexible workout clothes and a water bottle. Trainers or flat-soled shoes are fine. There's nothing to buy before your first session.

Do I need experience or fitness to start?

+
No. Most students arrive with zero martial arts background. Ben starts everyone with the fundamentals and builds up from there — fitness is something you'll gain from training, not a requirement to begin.

How is Krav Maga different from other martial arts?

+
There's no sparring for points, no forms or belts to grade through for their own sake — just practical technique trained progressively for real situations. For a full comparison against BJJ, boxing, MMA and more, see Best Martial Art for Self-Defence.

What is Krav Maga Global (KMG)?

+
Krav Maga Global is the leading international Krav Maga organisation, founded by Eyal Yanilov, who trained directly under Imi Lichtenfeld. KMG Hastings is the only KMG-certified club in the region — every class follows the same curriculum taught in 60+ countries. Learn more about KMG.
